Context

Thomas Lubanga Dyilo was the founder and leader of the Union des Patriotes Congolais (UPC) and commander-in-chief of its military wing, the Forces Patriotiques pour la Libération du Congo (FPLC). He was charged with war crimes committed in the Ituri region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo between 2002 and 2003. The case is notable as the first trial before the ICC and focused on the enlistment, conscription, and use of child soldiers under the age of fifteen. He was convicted on 14 March 2012 and sentenced to 14 years of imprisonment.
