Context

Ali Muhammad Ali Abd-Al-Rahman, also known as “Ali Kushayb”, was a senior leader of the Janjaweed militia in Darfur. He was surrendered to the ICC in June 2020. The case concerns alleged crimes committed in Darfur, Sudan, between 2003 and 2004. On 20 July 2023, Trial Chamber I found him guilty of multiple war crimes and crimes against humanity and sentenced him to 20 years of imprisonment.
