Context

Al Hassan Ag Abdoul Aziz Ag Mohamed Ag Mahmoud was alleged chief of Islamic police in Timbuktu and a member of Ansar Dine and Al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM). He was convicted on 26 June 2024 of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed between April 2012 and January 2013 in Timbuktu, northern Mali. He was sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment, subsequently reduced by 12 months.
